On August 8, 2009, the United States Mint began sales of the American Samoa Quarter First Day Coin Cover. This was the fourth coin cover released for the 2009 DC & US Territories Coin Cover Program, which began with the release of the District of Columbia Coin Cover in April.
Each coin cover features two American Samoa Quarters. One quarter comes from the Philadelphia Mint with “P” mint mark, and the other comes from the Denver Mint with the “D” mint mark. The coins are mounted onto a card featuring images of American Samoa with a 44c Flag Stamp. The postmark on the card is dated July 27, 2009 at Pago Pago, AS.
The product has a maximum production of 20,000 units and is priced at $14.95 plus applicable shipping and handling charges.
The American Samoa Quarter features the ava bowl and whisk and staff, items from special Samoan ceremonies. The background shows an image of the coastline with coconut trees. The reverse was designed by Stephen Clark and sculpted by Charles Vickers.
