Collector interest has been intense for the Perth Mint’s 2012 Year of the Dragon Gold and Silver Coins. These releases are part of the Australian Lunar Series II, which features the twelve animals of China’s ancient lunar calendar. The dragon is the only mythological create within the Chinese zodiac. People born in dragon years are regarded as confident, enterprising, independent, self-assured, brave and passionate.
Bullion versions of the Australian 2012 Year of the Dragon Coins were first made available on September 1, 2011. The .999 silver coins are available in 1/2 oz, 1 oz, 2 oz, 5 oz, 10 oz, 1 kilo, and 10 kilo sizes. Maximum mintages are established for the 1 oz size at 300,000 coins, and for the 10 kilo size at 500 coins. The .9999 gold coins are available in 1/20 oz, 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, 1 oz, 2 oz, 10 oz, 1 kilo, and 10 kilo sizes. Maximum mintages are established for the 1 oz size at 30,000 coins, and for the 10 kilo size at 100 coins. Sizes without a maximum will have unlimited mintages until the close of production at the end of 2012.
According to the Perth Mint, the entire maximum mintage for the 1 oz gold and 1 oz silver coins has already been produced, with approximately 90% already sold. Final orders are expected to be received within the next week. The limited mintage and high demand for the 1 oz silver bullion coins has led the coins to be priced on the secondary market at a significant premium to the value of the precious metals content. At least two U.S. based bullion dealers have offered the coins for prices around $100 each. Some dealers are selling encapsulated and graded coins for even higher prices.
Even though not subject to a maximum mintage, at this time the Perth Mint has suspended taking new orders for the 1/2 oz, 2 oz, and 5 oz silver bullion coins due to the unprecedented demand. Although the Perth Mint could not provide an exact date when new orders would be accepted, they do expect to resume taking new orders for either the 1/2 oz or 2 oz size coins in November.
