On October 12, the National Bank of Ukraine issued a new coin that speaks to the countless volunteers who give their time and efforts to those less fortunate, or who offer their expertise in many sectors of society from education to home-care and emergency services. Entitled “Ukraine Begins with You,” the coin honors the many dedicated volunteers who answer the call to come to the aid of vulnerable members of society, helping address the country’s most urgent problems as well as offering knowledge and contributing to a sophisticated network of community initiatives, volunteers, and organizations.
The coin, which is produced by the Mint of Ukraine on behalf of the National Bank, is designed by artists Volodymyr Taran, Oleksandr Kharuk, and Sergey Kharuk. The obverse design features the national Ukrainian emblem, a stylized trident that was originally the mark of the princely State of Volodymyr the Great. The trident is made up of hearts of various sizes, symbolizing the sacrifice and goodness of all Ukrainians. On the left side of the primary design is the vertical inscription УКРАЇНА (Ukraine); on the right, also in vertical text, is the coin’s face value, 5 ГРИВЕНЬ (5 Grivnia). Below the featured design is the coin’s year of issue, 2016, along with the Mint of Ukraine’s mintmark.
On the reverse of the commemorative coin is a symbolic composition, at the center of which is the outline of a Ukrainian soldier wearing a colorized yellow-and-blue heart. The soldier is surrounded on all sides by open hands; each outstretched palm shows a heart, representing love, care, donation, and kindness.
