The following was sent in an e-mail to the numismatic press.
The 2020 End of WWII 75th Anniversary American Gold Eagle one-ounce Proof coin and the End of World War II 75th Anniversary American Silver Eagle Proof coin were released for sale at noon ET on November 5. The release of these coins resulted in the highest website traffic we have ever experienced, which greatly exceeded our expected capacity. This high volume caused website instability, and customers encountered error messages and in some cases were unable to purchase their desired product. Due to extremely high demand, the American Gold Eagle Proof coin became unavailable by 12:07 p.m. We are pleased with the initial demand, but are also in the process of evaluating the various customer concerns and system constraints and/or failures we experienced.
We want to assure you that the United States Mint remains committed to providing the highest possible level of customer service, and regret any inconvenience or frustration this buying experience caused.

The mint had over a year to resolve this problem, as the same thing happened last year. I don’t recall with which coin, though. So their statement is nothing more than a lame excuse and a lie. It will probably happen again, when they release the End of World War II 75th Anniversary 24-Karat Gold Coin and Silver Medal, and they’ll just give another excuse with lies.
They need to make it up to us who clicked on the “add to cart” button, and got screwed
That’s baloney. Guaranteed the big dealers weren’t shut out. They were all on EBAY pre-selling. This happens every time there is an announced limited mintage.
I agree with both comments above….All the mint does is make people mad….Also with the new prices on coins. I am not going to be buying any more. My collecting days are over.
2019-S Reverse Proof Silver Eagle 25,000 announced mintage. 2020 75th anniversary, end of WWII Silver Eagle, 75,000 announced mintage. Same internet problems. I was frozen out both times, but LO…Big Dealers are selling these already. Same every time. Just two points…1) NO MORE PRE-Announced rarities; 2) No more nonsense explanations for this continuing incompetence.
Total incompetence.
I got my V75 silver Eagle
Mint should do a lottery or raffle….limit one and if you’ve won the lottery in the last year…ineligible!
The same old apology for the same incompetence. Same problem happened today for item 20XG. The decision makers at the mint are only working there because they can’t cut it in a real business job. For years they have continually put ridiculous, low limits on obvious high demand products and then throw up their hands in surprise when the website blows up. Think of the profits the Mint is leaving on the street for the coin hucksters (who always somehow have product). FIRE THE LOT starting with the Director!! I’m done buying any new US Mint products from any source, including the 3rd party carpetbaggers!
