The Bank of Sierra Leone has announced (16th July) the availability of the most recent series of collector coins entitled “The Big Five,” which will soon be available as cupro-nickel crown-size coins. The “Big Five” refers to the animals that freely inhabit the African continent and whose presence in the wild is both breathtaking and awe-inspiring. The Big Five includes the African elephant, the lion, the rhinoceros, the leopard, and the water buffalo, all of which were featured on pure silver double-crowns earlier this year.
These unique and incredible animals are impressive in their own right and if you are lucky enough to witness any of them in their natural habitat, it will remain with you for years to come. Following on the immense success of the five silver Proof-quality releases, the new set includes the exact same designs on standard size crown coins struck to a Brilliant Uncirculated quality and are produced in cupro-nickel.
The coins are produced by the Pobjoy Mint at their facilities in Surrey, on behalf of the Bank of Sierra Leone. Each coin features the head of each animal in The Big Five: The elephant, lion, rhino, leopard, and buffalo. The special incused rim features an African pattern to continue the theme. Also included below the depiction of each animal is the denomination of 1 DOLLAR.
The reverse of the coins features the crest of the Republic of Sierra Leone, which is centred in the middle of the coin, with the text REPUBLIC OF SIERRA LEONE placed above the crest. The year of issue, 2019, is shown beneath the crest.
