Sales levels for the United States Mint’s American Gold and Silver Eagle bullion coins declined during the month of May 2015. Declines were marked compared to both the prior month as well as the year ago period.
The monthly sales for the one ounce American Silver Eagle bullion coins reached 2,023,500 ounces. This was down compared to the prior month sales of 2,851,500 ounces and down significantly from the year ago period sales of 3,988,500.
The latest monthly sales total for Silver Eagle bullion coins is the lowest figure since July 2014.
Late last week, the US Mint announced that allocation would be lifted for the silver bullion coins effective June 1. Rather than a result of increased capacity, the move may have actually been a result of tapering demand as evidenced by the recent sales trend.
For the year to date, Silver Eagle sales have reached 16,946,000 ounces. This is 20.9% below the sales from the comparable year ago period of 21,436,500 ounces.
