The Royal Mint of the United Kingdom has created a unique, one off Christmas cracker full of gold. The traditional cracker, a modified novelty firecracker for the Christmas festive season, is a must-have at every British Christmas table and given to each diner.
Ordinary Christmas crackers are usually filled with small trinkets of all sorts. However, this golden cracker opens to reveal the ultimate gift of five 22 carat gold £5 proof quality pieces.
The £5 gold coin is equal in weight to five sovereigns and features the exquisite depiction of Benedetto Pistrucci’s “St. George slaying the dragon” seen on the reverse of British gold sovereigns since 1817. The obverse of the coins carries the present circulation type portrait of H.M. Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley.
The cracker, certainly the ultimate in pure indulgence went on sale December 9, 2010, priced at £10,000, (USD$ 15,750). Each £5 gold piece is legal tender and struck in .916 gold (22 carat) to proof quality with a weight of 39.94 grams and a diameter of 36.02 mm.
