The United States Mint will begin sales of the 2011 American Gold Eagle Proof Coins today, April 21, 2011 at 12:00 Noon ET. These 22 karat gold coins represent one of the Mint’s most popular annual offerings.
The American Gold Eagle features the obverse design of the classic St. Gaudens Double Eagle. The full figure of Liberty is pictured, holding a torch and olive branch, striding confidently forward. The rays of the sun and the Capitol building appear in the background. The reverse design, created by Miley Busiek, features a male eagle carrying an olive branch to a nest containing a female eagle and eaglets. Since the introduction of the series in 1986, the US Mint has offered collector versions of the coin struck in proof quality, with the exception of 2009 when the offering was canceled.
The 2011 Proof Gold Eagles will be struck in one ounce, one-half ounce, one-quarter ounce, and one-tenth ounce sizes. These coins carry legal tender face values of $50, $25, $10, and $5, respectively. Each coin is available for sale individually or as part of a four coin set. The coins are packaged in blue velvet, satin lined cases and come with a certificate of authenticity.
While no household ordering limits have been set for the product, there are maximum production levels established for each ordering option. The levels set by product also serve to create maximum mintage levels for each individual coin.
