The Treasury of the British Virgin Islands has announced the issuance of a new collector coin paying tribute to one of the most unique national monuments in North America: Mount Rushmore. The extraordinary monument, located in the state of South Dakota, covers an area of 1,278.45 acres which amounts to two square miles or 5.17 km, and is 5,725 feet or 1,745 meters above sea level. Sculpted by Danish-American artist Gutzon Borglum (1867 – 1941) and his son Lincoln Borglum (1912 – 1986), the Mount Rushmore memorial features sixty foot or eighteen meter high granite sculptures of the heads of four American presidents. Work on the monument began in 1927. The presidents featured are: George Washington, considered the father of the American nation; Thomas Jefferson, author of the U.S. Declaration of Independence and third American president; Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president who preserved the Union of the United States during the Civil War; and Theodore Roosevelt, who is often ranked by scholars as one of the greatest U.S. Presidents and is remembered for leading the U.S. into what has been termed the Progressive Era. Various stages of the Mount Rushmore monument were completed between 1934 and 1939.
The coin also marks the 150th anniversary of the death of Abraham Lincoln, who was assassinated shortly after the conclusion of the American Civil War in April of 1865.
Following the success of previous issues of high relief strike coins, the Pobjoy Mint has utilized the same process for the Mount Rushmore silver coin. With its intricately detailed design and deep strike, the coin is a great tribute to the national landmark. Its reverse image depicts the face of Mount Rushmore with its amazing sculptures of the four famous American Presidents rising above the surface. The obverse includes an effigy of HM Queen Elizabeth II as designed by Ian Rank-Broadley.
