On September 29, 2022, the U.S. Mint is releasing the 2022-W Palladium American Eagle, which has a Reverse Proof finish. Struck at the West Point Mint, the coin has a mintage limit of only 7,500 — less than previous years.
To complement the coins, Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) is offering the elegant Palladium Label for no additional fee. Coins submitted within the first thirty days of release are also eligible for the popular NGC Early Releases and First Releases designations and labels. For Early Releases / First Releases cutoff dates, click here.
The high relief design of the Palladium Eagle was adapted from a coin and medal that were both designed by the famous sculptor Adolph A. Weinman. The “Winged Liberty” obverse is taken from the 1916-1945 “Mercury” dime, while the dynamic eagle on the reverse is based on the 1907 American Institute of Architects gold medal.
Every year, the Palladium Eagle cycles through different finish types: Proof, Reverse Proof, and Uncirculated. This year, the coin will have a Reverse Proof finish, with a mirror-like design and a frosted background. This finish was last used on the 2019 coin.
