On December 1, 2011, the United States Mint began sales of the latest release of the First Spouse Gold Coin Program. The coin features Lucretia Garfield, the spouse of the 20th President of the United States James Garfield.
The obverse of the coin, designed by Barbara Fox and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill, features a portrait of the First Lady along with inscriptions “Lucretia Garfield”, “In God We Trust”, “Liberty”, “20th”, “1881”, and “2011 W”. The reverse of the coin, designed and sculpted by Michael Gaudioso, includes an image of Lucretia Garfield seated before a canvas with a brush and palette. This design is intended to represent her interest in art.
Each coin is struck in .9999 purity and contains one half ounce of gold. Both proof and uncirculated versions are available, which are both struck at the West Point Mint. The coins are placed within a plastic capsule and packaged in a custom designed hardwood presentation case with a certificate of authenticity.
A maximum mintage of 15,000 has been established across both proof and uncirculated versions. There are no household ordering limits imposed.
Pricing is currently $1,029 for the proof version of the coin and $1,016 for the uncirculated version. These pricing levels are subject to change as frequently as weekly, based on the average market price of gold.
