The Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance has issued (18th December) Proof-quality collector coins to mark the Italian presidency of the G20 Organisation, which Rome will preside over until the end of 2021. The current theme for the new year is THINK 20, which reflects on the organisation’s encouragement and function of putting ideas and concepts into practise.
The most recent handover ceremony was conducted on the 30th November, where Saudi Arabia handed over the presidency of the G20 to Italy. Due to the current conditions of the pandemic, much of the collective meetings will be held in virtual format as heads of state and government meet via international encrypted Internet connection, with the meeting chaired by the host country. The G20 will culminate in the Leaders’ Summit, which will be held in Rome on the 30th and 31st October.
The 16-sided coins are produced by the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato at their facilities in Rome on behalf of the Italian Finance Ministry and are designed by Maria Carmela Colaneri. The obverse side depicts a stylised female profile facing left along with a representation of the Italian G20 insignia, a five-pointed star, and a detail of a cog-wheel, symbolic of Italy’s industrial capacity. A representation of the Italian flag completes the design. The text REPUBBLICA ITALIANA is placed above and below the primary design along the rim. On the reverse side, the logo of the Italian G20 Presidency is featured in the centre. At the top of the logo is the year of issue 2020 and to the left field of the logo is the letter R, identifying the IPZS in Rome. Above the logo is the commemorative text PRESIDENZA ITALIANA along the rim and below the logo is the coin’s value of 5 EURO.
