The Istituto Poligrafico Zecca della Stato (IPZS) has released new silver collector coins (2nd October) which acknowledge the 50th anniversary of the country’s national or State Police service. Established in 1968, the Associazione Nazionale Polizia di Stato (ANPS, or National Association of the State Police) is committed to high ethical standards and acts as an arbiter between retired and in-service police officers. Joining the association is voluntarily and the ANPS is present throughout the country, with 170 sections or stations both within the country and abroad. The association is the guardian of the Medagliere della Polizia di Stato, which is an extraordinary symbol of the sacrifice and devotion of the police personnel and their commitment to the security of Italian citizens both at home and abroad.

The coin is designed by artist Silvia Petrassi, who has included on the obverse the logo of the ANPS, which is combined with the stylised number 50 in honour of the anniversary. Below is a cartouche with the inscription ANNIVERSARIO and the years 1968 and 2018, followed by the name of the designer PETRASSI.
The reverse side features, in the foreground, two figures representing ANPS in their dress uniforms. In the background is detailed artwork from the painting representing Saint Michael the Archangel, patron saint of police forces. The original painting is by Guido Reni and is preserved in the Church of Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception in Rome. On the right of the primary design is the letter “R,” identifying the Mint of Rome, and below is the value 5 EURO. Around the design is the commemorative inscription ASSOCIAZIONE NAZIONALE POLIZIA DI STATO.
