The Monnaie De Paris have launched a new set of three coins which features one of the French Navy’s most well-known helicopter carriers.
The “Jeanne d’Arc” is one of the most famous French helicopter carriers of the French Navy (commissioned 1964 – 2010). She was the third vessel of the French Navy named after Joan of Arc, a national heroine of France and saint of the Catholic Church who repelled the English invasion during the Hundred Years’ War. She has conducted numerous enforcement campaigns, served as a training ship for thousands of cadets of the Navy and was engaged in several humanitarian operations or interventions such as the rescue of hostages. On the 1st September 2010, Jeanne d’Arc’s colors and name were withdrawn, formally ending her life as a ship in the Marine Nationale. This last ceremony of the colors, was held in the ship’s home port of Brest.
The three coins in the series, one gold and two silver, all feature a single portrayal on the obverse of the Helicopter cruiser from a slight aerial angle. Shown in the open sea, the Ship is surmounted at the top left with a facsimile of its crest as a medallion. The background shows a compass and modern navigational tool positioned off-center to the upper right of the primary design. The initials “RF” are seen just underneath the Cruiser. The reverse, also uniform to all three coins, depicts a set of five stylized ships at sea along with a nautical chain link just under the ships which includes the year of issue. The text “LES GRANDS NAVIRES FRANÇAIS” (The great French ships) is placed above the primary design and along the upper edge.
The denomination of the coin (€50 for the gold, €50 for the large silver and €10 for the small silver) is placed boldly just below the text of the series’ title. This is the second entry of the 2012 “Ships” series, all coins are produced to proof quality.
