The Monnaie de Paris has released the second series of hexagonal-shaped gold and silver commemorative coins marking the XXXIII Olympiad scheduled to be hosted in the city of Paris in 2024. Having previously hosted in 1900 and 1924, Paris will become only the second city to host the Summer Olympic Games three times after London in 1908, 1948, and 2012. The Games will take place from the 26th July to the 11th August 2024, with Paris acting as the main host city together with 16 additional cities spread across Metropolitan France, including the remote French overseas territory in the South Pacific of Tahiti as a subsite. The coins pay tribute to this renowned and greatly anticipated international competition through a collection of coin designs highlighting sport, its values, the athletes and, the country’s heritage as host. The Olympic and Paralympic spirit are celebrated with the themes and motifs over a four-year series concluding in 2024.
The obverse of the second set of coins depicts the traditional Olympian athlete, a discus thrower, overlooking the athletics stadium of the Games. Also featured is one of Paris’ most celebrated landmarks, the Arc de Triomphe in the background, symbolising the host city. Just under the arch are the two initials RF (“Republique Francaise”), and to the right is the official logo for the Paris Olympic Games.
The reverse side features two interlocking hexagons serving as a frame for the text REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE and the coins’ denomination of EURO 250 (gold) and EURO 10 (silver), along with a wreath of maple and olive branches.
The commemorative obverse design is also available on the €2 commemorative coins struck in both Proof and Brilliant Uncirculated versions. This coin is not available as a circulation release.
