The Monnaie de Paris will soon begin accepting orders for a new gold coin, which carries a face value of €5000 making it the one of the largest legal tender denomination gold coin to be produced within the Eurozone. Each coin has a weight of 75 grams (2.41 troy ounces) and a diameter of 45 mm.
Struck to brilliant uncirculated or FDC quality and in .999 fine gold, the obverse of the coin which is designed by artist Joaquin Jimenez depicts a modern interpretation of the traditional “Hercules” motif found of French coinage from 1849 and intermittently since and including the introduction of the EURO currency in 2002. The reverse design includes a series of geometric six-sided shapes over-lapped to produce an ornamental edge motif. In the center, the coin’s denomination of “EURO 5000” surrounded with both a garland of oak and laurel branches and the text “REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE”.
The Monnaie de Paris have announced that a total mintage of 2,000 pieces has been authorized, however the coin will only be sold by subscription which requires a deposit. The coins can be ordered from the 12th to the 28th November with dispatch occurring from the 3rd December to the 26th January 2013.
A silver version with a face value of €100 is also available, (also by pre-order & reserve deposit) the coin is produced with the same primary designs – both obverse and reverse as its gold counter-part. Struck to Brilliant uncirculated quality in .900 fine silver, it has a weight of 50 grams and a diameter of 45 mm. A mintage of 50,000 pieces has been authorized.
