The Monnaie de Paris has released (1st April) new gold and silver Proof-quality coins in honour of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) tournament, which takes place later this year. Founded on the 21st May 1904, FIFA is responsible for managing and developing football throughout the world. The first tournament for the FIFA cup took place in France in 1928, welcoming all the various national football federations recognised by FIFA. The 22nd tournament of the FIFA World Cup will take place in Qatar. This is unprecedented in many respects, in addition to having a country from the Arab World as a designated host country for the first time, it is also the first time that the tournament will take place in autumn (in order to take advantage of the season’s milder temperatures). The first matches will commence from the 21st November and conclude on the 18th December 2022.
€50 Gold & €10 Silver — The obverse side of this coin pays tribute to the two victories of the French National team at the FIFA World Cup, in 1998 and 2018, respectively. The official trophy of the competition is in the centre of the coin, with a representation of the French flag shown as a banner in the background. The inscription seen above and to the left in French reads La France Championne du Monde (“French champions of the world”)
€200 Gold — This coin, which includes the year 2021 in the design, also focuses on the Qatar 2022 logo or emblem of the competition, where the cup is surrounded by characters and symbols referring to football and the Arabic language. The emblem is a clever and artistic reference to Qatari culture, drawing inspiration from the traditional scarf from Qatar and waving in the wind as if in the dunes of the desert. Below the emblem is a reference to the football field outlined with the words Pl ay – to gether joined with the outlines representing the football field.
Both the gold and silver coin share the same design on the reverse, which features an intricate bust of a falcon, the national bird of Qatar. Endowed with a hooked beak and piercing vision, it is a symbol of power and nobility. Centred in the eye of the falcon is the image of a football, referencing the FIFA tournament. Above and towards the left is the text in English FIFA WORLD CUP QATAR 2022. To the lower-right is the denomination of the coin 200 euro or 50 euro (gold), or 10 euro (silver). The initials RF (“Republique Francaise”) indicate the issuer country.
