The Government of Niue have issued a new Christmas coin which celebrates the holidays in seasonal style and includes a technological process highlighting Christmas snowflakes.
Christmas has always been a magical time, the time rich in pleasant moments and memories spent with your loved ones, it’s a time of joy, love and fulfilled dreams for young & old alike. On this occasion, Niue, the tropical south pacific island – not known to enjoy a snowy Christmas day – has taken the opportunity to issue a one-of-a-kind coin which highlights the first photographs of snowflakes, made in 1880 by Wilson A. Bentley!
The author took thousands of photographs on the basis of which he discovered that every snow crystal is unique and no two are alike. What also adds to the charm to this coin are images of two famous angels from the “Sistine Madonna” painting by Raphael Santi. For the first time in coin production an innovative technique has been used, that of the 4-angle latent image which the depiction of a snowflake appearing under an inscription changes right in front of our eyes. Depending on the angle of inclination of the coin we can see four different snowflakes.
The coin, struck by the Mint of Poland in Warsaw includes on the reverse, the coat of arms of the state of Niue along with the denomination and year “2015”
