The Royal Canadian Mint has launched a new silver coin that captures the extraordinary natural colors that autumn brings to much of North America during this time of year.
To explore Canada is to experience a host of breathtaking, ever-changing landscapes—particularly in autumn, when the cooler season flushes Canada’s diverse scenery with brilliant tints of red, orange, and yellow. Scores of visitors, from simple sight-seers to intrepid travelers, plan special excursions to view the fall foliage. Nature’s admirers can peer eagerly from their windows as their train chugs through hills and beautiful valleys.
As autumn arrives in Canada, forests tht were green only days before have now been infused with vibrant colors. It is a phenomenon that never fails to inspire awe in both the wondering visitors experiencing it for the first time, and the fortunate Canadian residents who witness it annually. The colors are warm, earthy, and bring a sense of inert coziness felt even outdoors. As we ready ourselves for the winter days ahead, we also take full advantage of a busy harvest and its bounties.
Canada is uniquely poised to witness this phenomenal change due to the abundance of maple trees in the northeast. As the temperatures cool down, the naturally occurring sugars contained within the leaves turns color – deep and vibrant reds, to vivid yellows and oranges, and finally to tawny browns before the leaves return to the soil – and the circle continues!
This coin, designed by Canadian artist Jacky MacDonald, features a timeless image of autumn in Canada. Engraved into the silver is an image of classic steam locomotive chugging along the winding track, as a silver cloud of smoke rises up from its chimney. The autumn colors in the leaves have been recreated with the use of red, orange, and yellow hues of paint and carefully applied to the surface.
The obverse includes the effigy of HM Queen Elizabeth II designed by artist Susanna Blunt and used on all circulation and most commemorative Canadian coinage since 2003.
