The Imprensa Nacional Casa da Moeda (INCM) have announced the issue of two new commemorative coins which celebrate the 100th anniversary of military aviation in Portugal.
The design of the coins recalls the history of military aviation, evoking on its obverse the early pioneering days, with a seaplane flying over the ocean and, on the reverse, an F16 fighter overflying land on a mission. The two faces, past and present, are connected by the course of aircraft.
Both coins share the same design and are created by sculptor José Simão. The reverse includes the commemorative text “1914 – 2014 100 ANOS AVIACAO MILITAR” while the obverse includes the national crest of Portugal just above and to the center of the primary design. The coins are produced in two versions, a BU version in cupro-nickel and a sterling silver example minted in proof quality.
