CCAC Recommends Doolittle and Fighter Ace Gold Medal Designs

During a meeting on October 14th, 2014, the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee reviewed and discussed the obverse and reverse designs for the Doolittle Tokyo Raiders and American Fighter Aces Congressional Gold Medals. In attendance were Chairman Gary Marks, Robert Hoge, Erik Jansen, Mike Moran, Thomas Uram, Dr. Herman Viola, and Heidi Wastweet, as well as members of the U.S. Mint staff. Committee member Mary Lannin attended via teleconference.

Tokyo Raiders Congressional Gold Medal

For The Doolittle Tokyo Raiders Congressional Gold Medal, obverse design 2 and reverse design 8 were selected for recommendation to the Treasury Secretary. The votes for each design were as follows:

Obverse:

Design 1: 0 points Design 1a: 0 points Design 2: 17 points
Design 3: 4 points Design 4: 6 points Design 5: 0 points
Design 6: 14 points

Reverse:

Design 1: 0 points Design 2: 0 points Design 3: 0 points
Design 4: 12 points Design 5: 0 points Design 6: 0 points
Design 7: 0 points Design 8: 20 points

American Fighter Aces Congressional Gold Medal

For the American Fighter Aces Congressional Gold Medal, obverse design 2 and reverse design 7 were selected for recommendation to the Treasury Secretary. The votes for each design were as follows:

Obverse:

Design 1: 6 points Design 2: 14 points Design 3: 2 points
Design 4: 12 points Design 5: 0 points Design 6: 0 points

Reverse:

Design 1: 6 points Design 2: 0 points Design 3: 0 points
Design 4: 7 points Design 5: 0 points Design 6: 0 points
Design 7: 15 points Design 8: 7 points

After the meeting, I reached out to Chairman Marks for general comments; he said that “the members were quite pleased with the portfolios [of designs]. They felt the artwork was generally very well done.”
