The Royal Canadian Mint has released (28th September) new $2 commemorative coins which remember as well as honour the 50th anniversary of one of Canada’s more memorable sporting events. The triumph of Team Canada over what was the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics team (or Team USSR) in the 1972 Summit Series is legendary. The hard-fought tournament where the pride of a nation was on the line at every face off, ultimately and triumphantly crowned Canada the true world champions of hockey.
On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of this sporting success, three million coins have been minted, of which two million feature full colour on the reverse side of the inner disc. The new coins will gradually reach Canadians through their change as bank branches and businesses replenish their inventories of $2 circulation coins. Designed by Canadian artist Joel Kimmel, the inner disc of the coin features two hockey players representing Team Canada. Set against the team’s stylized maple leaf jersey emblem, two charging hockey players are framed by the words THE SERIES — LA SÉRIE and 50 YEARS — ANS. The coaches’ initials and the jersey numbers of every player surround the core. *The obverse features the effigy of her Late Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, created by Susanna Blunt. The denomination 2 DOLLARS is shown below the Queen’s likeness.
The design is also included on both the gold and silver Proof strikes, along with the addition of a laser-engraved hockey net pattern framing the Summit Series celebration on the coin’s reverse and also shown on the obverse as a background pattern. The denomination of 200 DOLLARS (gold) or 30 DOLLARS (silver) is placed below the primary design on the reverse.
