The Royal Mint of Belgium — Herdenkingsmunten.be has released (28th September) new silver Proof coins which remember the inauguration of the Red Star Line shipping company, which was founded in 1872 by shipping magnates from the United States and two Antwerp business partners, Jules Bernard von der Becke and William Edward Marsily.
The coins are produced by the Royal Dutch Mint at their facilities in Houten, Netherlands, on behalf of the Royal Belgian Mint. The reverse side of the coin includes a depiction of the S.S. Belgenland. This luxury cruise ship sailed as part of the Red Star Line from 1923 to 1934. Below the sailing ship is the commemorative text in English 150 YEARS. The outline of the Red Star logo can be seen in the background along with the Antwerp skyline to the left and on the right by that of New York’s skyline. The obverse side includes an effigy of HM King Philip designed by Royal Belgian Mint artisan Luc Luycx, facing right along with his crowned monogram placed to the right and text surrounding the likeness of the king, which reads BELGIE – BELGIQUE – BELGIEN, representing the official three languages of Belgium. The denomination 20 EURO is placed below the primary design, and the year of issue 2022 is shown in a vertical direction.
