The Mint of Austria have announced that their next commemorative coin will be issued to mark the upcoming skiing championships in Schladming, Austria.
In a little more than 110 days, the best skiers from 70 countries around the world will come together in Schladming from the 4th to the 17th February 2013 to compete in 11 different ski disciplines. It is the second time that Schladming will host the World Ski Championships, the first time was in 1982. Schladming has long been a favorite ski destination and for 2013, more than 450 athletes and close to half a million visitors, including 3,000 journalists from around the world are expected to come to Schladming during this time.
The copper version of the commemorative coin, which will be released into circulation before the event on 24th October, is a distinctive nine-sided shape and has a face value of 5 EURO. The obverse, designed by Austrian Mint engraver Herbert Waehner, includes a bold design depicting a slalom skier in a precise tuck position as he schusses down the slope of Schladming with snow flying off the base of his skis. In the background is a depiction of some of the challenging slopes located in the Schladming ski area, as well as the futurist Skygate. The date 2013, the year when the Ski Championships will be held, peaks to reflect the winners’ podium. Also located on this side of the coin is the year of issue 2012. Stylized snowflakes complete the design background.
The reverse, designed by the well-known Mint of Austria engraver Helmut Andexlinger, includes the coin’s denomination “5 EURO” encircled by the shields of the nine federal provinces of Austria. The legend “REPUBLIK OSTERREICH” is positioned around the shields.
The silver version is struck to FDC quality in .800 fineness with a weight of 10 grams and a diameter of 28.5 mm. A total mintage of 50,000 pieces has been authorized. The silver coin is packaged in a colorful folder with both German and English text. Both coins will be available on the 24th October when Austria will mark the 100th day before the commencement of the championships.
