The Perth Mint’s Australian Lunar Series II will celebrate the Year of the Snake with the release of 99.99% pure gold coins struck to proof quality in limited mintages. This will coincide with the release of several silver proof coins featuring an alternate design.
The ancient Chinese lunar calendar features twelve different animals. People born within the date range of February 10, 2013 to January 30, 2014 will be born within the Year of the Snake. People born under the influence of this sign are said to be intelligent, graceful, independent, analytical, and charming. Previous date ranges have included the years 1905, 1917, 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, and 2001.
The reverse design of the gold coins features a snake among grass and bamboo shoots. The Chinese character for “snake” appears along with the inscription “Year of the Snake” and the Perth Mint’s “P” mint mark. The obverse of each coin carries the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II with inscriptions indicating the “2013” date, precious metal weight and purity, and the legal tender denomination.
The 2013 Year of the Snake Gold Proof Coins are available in 1 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz sizes, as well as a three coin set containing one coin of each size. The mintage limits are indicated to be 3,000 individual 1 oz coins, 5,000 individual 1/4 oz coins, 5,000 individual 1/10 oz coins, and 3,000 three coin sets.
Each coin and the three coin set are presented in an oval shaped display case with illustrated shipper. A numbered certificate of authenticity accompanies each product.
