The Perth Mint has released the first numismatic products to celebrate the upcoming Year of the Snake. The proof quality coins are issued as part of the Australian Lunar Series II and come in a variety of different sizes and packaging options.
The ancient Chinese lunar calendar features twelve different animals, with the sixth animal within the cycle being the horse. Those born within the date range of January 31, 2014 to February 18, 2015 are said to be born in the Year of the Horse. People born under the influence of this sign are said to be hardworking, sociable, optimistic, and energetic.
The Year of the Horse Silver Coins feature a depiction of two horses standing within a stylized Chinese landscape. The Chinese character for “horse” appears above with the inscription “Year of the Horse” below. The Perth Mint’s “P” mint mark appears within the right field. On the obverse of the coin is the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II with the “2014” date, indication of precious metal content, and monetary denomination.
The Perth Mint has released four different sized 99.9% silver proof versions of the coin across four different packaging options. A 1 kilo sized coin is available with a mintage limit of 500 pieces worldwide. An individual 1/2 oz proof coin is available within an issue limit of 8,000 pieces from an overall maximum mintage of 9,000 pieces. An individual 1 oz proof coin is available with an issue limit of 5,000 pieces from an overall maximum mintage of 8,500. Finally, a three-coin proof set is available containing 1/2 oz, 1 oz, and 2 oz coins. The set is limited to 1,000 units. The 2 oz proof coin included in the set has a maximum mintage of 2,000.

The Chinese character for “horse” appears above, with “Year of the Horse” below. The Perth Mint’s “P” mint mark appears in the upper left field. The obverse of the coin features the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, with inscriptions indicating the year, precious metal content, and face value.

An individual 1 oz proof coin is available with an issue limit of 3,000 from an overall maximum mintage of 6,000. Individual 1/10 oz and 1/4 oz proof coins are available available with issue limits of 5,000 from an overall maximum mintage of 8,000. Lastly, a three-coin proof set containing each of the 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1 oz coins is available with an issue limit of 3,000 units.
