The Royal Australian Mint has released new gold and silver Proof coins struck with a domed effect that pays homage to one of the world’s greatest natural wonders: Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. Located in the Pacific Ocean off the northeastern coast of Australia, the Great Barrier Reef is a collection of coral reefs, shoals, and islets which is the world’s longest and largest coral reef ecosystem complex and Earth’s only living entity visible from space.
Designed by Royal Australian Mint artist Bronwyn Scott, the unique dome shape and striking colours represent the vibrancy of the Great Barrier Reef with the reverse showcasing this natural wonder from the sky. Flowing through the middle of the design is a bright school of fish, dividing the focus in a harmonious curve. The colour print features a flare of sunlight reflecting off the water. Around the edge of the colour print are various life forms found in the Great Barrier Reef including a whale shark, clown fish, giant clams, coral, and seaweed. Above the primary motif is the text GREAT BARRIER REEF and below 2022 BEAUTY, RICH & RARE.
The obverse of the coin features the Commonwealth effigy of HM Queen Elizabeth II created by engraver Jody Clark, surrounded by ornate, intricate, and delicate patterns, paying homage to the beauty of the Australian landscape.
