The Untied States Mint has started accepting orders from authorized purchasers for the first of the 2012 America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Coins. The first numismatic version is scheduled to go on sale next week.
Under Public Law 110-456, the Mint may strike and make available for sale five ounce .999 fine silver bullion coins that feature duplicate designs of the quarter dollars issued under the America the Beautiful Quarters Program. Initially, the offering of the new silver investment product did not go smoothly, with sales of the 2010-dated bullion coins halted and resumed with special terms and conditions for authorized purchasers to follow. The release of the first numismatic version was delayed until April 2011, when opening demand crashed the Mint’s website. The demand and sales for bullion and numismatic versions of the series eventually cooled.
On May 21, 2012, the US Mint began accepting orders for the 2012 El Yunque Five Ounce Silver Bullion Coins. As a bullion product, the Mint sells these coins to a small group of authorized purchasers in bulk quantities based on the market price of silver plus a mark up. The authorized purchasers then resell the coins to other dealers and the public.
The US Mint has indicated that the 2012-dated bullion coins will be struck to demand. Release dates are not yet available for the next four designs featuring Chaco Culture National Historical Park, Acadia National Park, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, and Denali National Park.
On May 29, 2012, the US Mint will begin accepting orders for the numismatic version of the El Yunque Five Ounce Silver Coin. This coin will carry an uncirculated finish created through a vapor blasting technique and carry the “P” mint mark. As a numismatic product, the coins will be sold directly to the public, with orders accepted by telephone or website. Pricing is established at $204.95 each, with a maximum mintage of 25,000.
Release dates for the next two numismatic releases of the series have been provided. The Chaco Culture Five Ounce Silver Coin will be released on July 9, 2012, and the Acadia Five Ounce Silver Coin will be released on August 13, 2012.
