Since the United States Mint will not be offering First Day Coin Covers for the America the Beautiful Quarters Program, a collector decided to make his own covers for the series. The collector, known on eBay as "greanmonkey", has created a batch of Yellowstone National Park Quarter covers as follow up to his previously created Hot Springs Quarter covers.
First Day Coin Covers generally consist of one or more coins mounted on a card and placed within an envelope. The envelope is stamped and postmarked with the circulation release date of the coins or other relevant date. The United States Mint has offered coin covers for most recent series which feature rotating designs. With a little bit of ingenuity, any collector can create their own unofficial coin covers.
The collector created Yellowstone National Park Quarter First Day Coin Covers include one Yellowstone Quarter each from the Philadelphia and Denver Mints. The coins are mounted within an envelope illustrated with a scene of the Old Faithful geyser erupting on the front and information about the coin on the back. The envelopes are stamped and posted marked Yellowstone National Park WY O.F. Sta 82190 with a date of June 1 AM 2010 . This cancellation is from the official circulation release date for the coins from a Post Office located within the park.
A total of 100 standard covers were created with 44 cent Flag stamps. Ten experimental covers with 8 cent Old Faithful stamps and a 37 cent Flag stamp were created, but these have all already been sold or given away. A number of others were post marked at Union Station, Washington, DC. The standard covers can be found for sale at this eBay seller account.
Creating First Day Coin Covers is not without its challenges. For these covers, a glossy card stock was used, which was more difficult to fold and punch. The glossy stock also resulted in sometimes spotty postmarks since the ink did not dry. The postmarks can also be difficult to read against the dark blue background.
For the next coin cover featuring the Yosemite National Park Quarter, the collector plans to address these issues by using a professional print shop, different paper, and an illustration with a lighter background in the top right.
