The Perth Mint has started accepting orders for the 2013 Year of the Snake 5 oz. Silver Proof Coin. This is from the Australian Lunar series II, which features the twelve animals of the ancient Chinese lunar calendar.
The snake is the sixth animal within the cycle. Those born within the date range of February 10, 2013 to January 30, 2014 will be born in the Year of the Snake. Previous date ranges have included the years 1917,1929,1941,1953,1965,1977,1989, and 2001.
The reverse design of the present release features a snake curled around a tree branch. The Chinese character for “snake” appears along with the inscription “Year of the Snake”. The obverse design contains the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of HM Queen Elizabeth II. Inscriptions include the “2013” date, the legal tender face value of “8 Dollars”, and the precious metal weight and purity.
Each coin is struck in 99.9% pure silver to proof quality. The weight is 155.50 grams, or 5 troy ounces, with a diameter of 65.60 mm. A maximum mintage of 5,000 pieces has been established for worldwide release.
The coins are housed in a black presentation case with a themed shipper. Each is accompanied by a numbered certificate of authenticity.
