Thanks so much, Alan. Learning to grade has been made more difficult in the Internet era because many purchases are made online. And each denomination comes with its own challenges. I have a few upcoming columns on when to break out coins for grading, and then I will dedicate one to grading in general, focusing on its key aspects: condition, luster, strike and eye appeal. I'll also focus on warning signs that a coin has been dipped, cleaned or slid into and out of holders too often, creating streaks of lines that can ruin a coin.

Hi Michael,

I've enjoyed reading your column on third party grading and the many aspects that concern it.
As someone who is just starting out in numismatics I wanted to get your take how to get past the learning curve on learning how to grade coins. I have trouble even telling MS coins from AU.
I have the Red Book and also the Official Guide to Coin Grading and Counterfeit Detection but I find that just looking at pictures and reading descriptions is not quite enough. I have also purchased a 10x Hasting Triplet loupe but I am not quite sure what I should be looking for when I examine the coins up close. Any general and/or specific advice would be much welcomed.
Look forward to reading your next column.
