The United States Mint will begin accepting orders from authorized purchasers for the latest release in the America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Bullion Coin series. The reverse design for the coin features Great Sand Dunes National Park located in Colorado.
The bullion series, which launched in 2010, features the designs of the America the Beautiful Quarters Program minted in 5 troy ounces of .999 fine silver. Each coin has a wide diameter of 3 inches and includes incused edge lettering indicating the precious metal weight and purity.
Like other bullion programs, the US Mint distributes the coins through a network of authorized purchasers who acquire the coins in bulk quantities based on the precious metal value plus a markup. The authorized purchasers then resell the coins to other bullion dealers, coin dealers, and the general public.
The reverse design of the Great Sand Dunes Five Ounce Silver Bullion Coins features a depiction of a father and son playing in the sand next to the creek bed. The distinctive mountains and sand dunes of the site are visible in the background.
In addition to the bullion version of the coin, a numismatic version will also be offered for sale later in the year. The numismatic coins carry an uncirculated finish with the “P” mint mark and are sold directly by the United States Mint. Sales are currently scheduled to begin on September 15, 2014.
