During the period covered by the latest US Mint numismatic product sales report, several gold and silver products experienced low sales due to a newly implemented or ongoing sales suspension. Other products seemed to experience a jump in sales as buyers anticipated a forthcoming suspension. The debut sales figures for the latest Presidential $1 Coin numismatic roll offering are also available.
The United States Mint suspended sales of all commemorative gold coins on August 12. In last week’s report, huge increases were registered for these products as buyers took advantage of the bargain prices relative to intrinsic value. In the current report, sales show minor negative adjustments as the suspension has continued. The Mint plans to implement a pricing grid that would allow for weekly pricing adjustments.
Sales of the available numismatic gold products had a relatively quiet week. One exception was the one ounce 2011 Proof Gold Eagle, which added 2,104 units. The total sales for the product have now reached 28,824, which is within striking distance of the maximum product limit of 30,000.
The 2010 Silver Proof Set and 2010 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set had sales suspended during the current period, accounting for the reduced sales. Meanwhile, the US Mint has continued to sell the 2011-dated versions of each set, which are priced a few dollars per set higher. As the market price of silver has moved upwards, buyers seem to be anticipating a suspension and subsequent repricing for these products, driving heavier sales.
The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Dollar rolls went on sale August 18, 2011. Collectors ordered 19,574 of the Philadelphia rolls and 19,170 of the Denver rolls. These numbers are a bit slower than the comparable figures for the previous release featuring Ulysses S. Grant.
One final note, the 2010-P Grand Canyon Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin now has reported sales of 27,154, which is above the maximum product limit of 27,000 units. Thus, it seems likely that the Mint will soon end sales and cancel any orders above the maximum number available.
The full US Mint numismatic product sales report appears below. The figures are compiled through August 22, 2011. The first number column represents total sales through the reporting date, and the second number column represents the change in sales since the last report. Products with sales followed by an asterisk (*) are no longer available from the United States Mint. Currently available US Mint products can be found online at http://catalog.usmint.gov/

I returned a GC ATB-P 5 Oz due to extremely bad quality. I am not very picky since I buy coins for personal collection but the coin is basically damaged with scratches. What a shame Mint just go ahead and sell the defective coin to someone else!
I ordered another one right away when I saw the ugly coin (asked my friend for a favor since the household limit was still in place and paid another shipping for it). My friend was curious asked why I didn’t just ask for a replacement since it would be free of shipping (the Mint did reimburse return costs). I told him I was afraid of a sold out by that time the coin returned to the Mint. It turned out to be an over-pessimistic statement since 5Oz ATB becomes increasingly less popular now. However, I am lucky enough to get a nice coin from my friend’s order probably sooner enough not to get someone else’s return at the time.
The burning issue is what mint product will
be 2011’s big winner. With gold explodeing
will sales slow ? Are the commemoratives
on permanent suspension ? Is the first Spouse
program headed for permanent retirement along
with the presedential dollar ? Are the 5 ounce collector ATB’s falling off the way side ? Just some thoughts to ponder.
Sadly, it appears that the “numismatic” 5 oz. ATB coins will basically end up only being worth their bullion value, at least the 2010 issues anyway. Assuming we see 2011 issues, maybe they will be lower-mintage and turn out differently.
However, I honestly don’t know if I want to continue tying up so much money in these with the entire future of the series being uncertain. I could end up stuck with expensive bullion pieces that I’ll have to wait for the melt value to reach the issue price before I can unload them for something better.
Brad, don’t know if you’re still watching this thread, but series that suffered sudden cancellations in the past have undergone dramatic price increases. Look at the mad dash to get Julia Grant first spouse coins caused by the prospect of the cancellation of the $1 coin program!
While it would be unfortunate if there was a cancellation of the P series, that might cause the 2010-Ps to go up in value, while also freeing up collectors’ dollars for other products such as the bullion AtBs or the soon to be released 25th anniversary silver proof set.
