US Mint Sales Report: 2013 Proof Gold Eagles Debut

Proof Gold EagleThe latest weekly United States Mint numismatic product sales report includes the opening numbers for the 2013 American Gold Eagle proof coins. Also, several silver numismatic products had sales suspended pending a price adjustment.

Sales of the 2013 Proof Gold Eagles opened on April 18, 2013 with four individual options and a four coin set available. The debut comes as the market price of gold underwent a significant decline, leading to a surge in sales for bullion coins. Sales of the collector coins seem to have also seen some increased demand. Through the reporting date of April 22, across all options sales accounted for 4,480.15 troy ounces of gold. This is a only modest 6% increase compared to the opening sales figures measured in ounces for the previous year, however it does break with the recent trend of declining year over year sales which had been occurring for most numismatic gold products.

From the available product options, the individual one-tenth ounce Proof Gold Eagle was the strongest seller, followed by the individual one ounce coin. Typically, these positions have been the opposite. Next was the four coin set, which includes one example each of the one ounce, half ounce, quarter ounce, and tenth ounce coins.

Early within the period covered by the report, the US Mint suspended sales for three silver numismatic products pending a price adjustment. The suspended products are the 2013 Proof Silver Eagle, 2012 Annual Uncirculated Dollar Coin Set, and the 2012 Chaco Culture Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin. Since these products were not available for ordering for most of the week, the weekly sales were small or negative.

The 2013 Perry’s Victory Quarter Three Coin Set also makes its debut on this week’s sales report, opening at 9,624 units.

The complete US Mint numismatic product sales report appears below. These figures are compiled through April 22, 2013. The first number column represents total sales through the reporting date, and the second number column represents the change in sales since the last report. Products which make their debut on this report are shown in bold. Products with sales followed by an asterisk (*) are no longer available from the United States Mint. Currently available US Mint products can be found online at http://catalog.usmint.gov/

  1. Samuel says

the 5-star gold, unc sold more than proof, is last yrs SSB the same situation? or people begin to hoard them early this yr?

  2. ABC says

The 5-Star Gold unc did not outsell the proof. The 3-coin set contains the proof as well, and over 10,000 sets have been sold.

  3. bobo says

Does anyone know where sales data for all past months can be accessed? It would be interesting to compare sales of the 5-star to the SSB and other past commemoratives, to get a sense of what kind of trajectory it is on relative to past coins. Same for FSs too.

  4. Steven says

Today marks three years I have been tracking sales of the 2010 Lincoln cent rolls. How much longer will these be for sale?
