The latest weekly United States Mint numismatic product sales report includes the debut of the 2013 Proof American Gold Buffalo Coins. The 2013 West Point Silver Eagle Set makes its third weekly appearance, with the four week ordering window winding down.
The US Mint began accepting orders for the 2013 Proof Gold Buffalo on May 23, 2013. There were a few factors which potentially weighed on opening orders. The first was the announcement that an individual reverse proof version of the coin will be offered later this year to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the design. Some collectors may potentially forgo the standard proof version in order to purchase the special reverse proof. The second factor was the potential for a price decrease for the offering this week. When sales opened, the proof Gold Buffalo was priced at $1,790 based on an average gold price within the $1,400 to $1,449.99 range. Some collectors may have waited to place their orders in anticipation of a price decrease, which did take place this morning, when the price was reduced by $50 to reflect an average gold price in the range of $1,350 to $1,399.99.
As of the reporting date of May 27, 2013, orders for the 2013 Proof Gold Buffalo have reached 4,863 units. Despite the two factors mentioned above, this represents a stronger start compared to last year, when initial orders reached only 4,110 units.
Looking further back, the 2011 proof had debut sales of 5,782; the 2010 proof had debut sales of 12,778; and the 2009 proof debuted at 19,468.
The US Mint continues accepting orders for the 2013 West Point Silver Eagle Set, which contains reverse proof and enhanced uncirculated coins bearing the “W” mint mark. As of the most recent information posted on the product page yesterday, sales have reached 214,211 units. This is approaching the final adjusted sales total of 224,981 achieved by the 2012 San Francisco Silver Eagle Set.
The complete US Mint numismatic product sales report appears below. Unless otherwise noted, these figures are compiled through May 27, 2013. The first number column represents total sales through the reporting date, and the second number column represents the change in sales since the last report. Products which make their debut on this report are shown in bold. Products with sales followed by an asterisk (*) are no longer available from the United States Mint. This year’s Buffalo started off with slightly higher sales but the price was also about $200 cheaper than last year’s. Last year the Buffalo launched on March 15 (two months earlier) that means less over all time to produce this year’s.
I think that the final mintage will be lower at the end of the year thanks to the late start & the upcoming Reverse Proof.
Which is EXACTLY why the standard Proof Buffalo may turn out to be THE winner this year. Everyone will flock to the Reverse Proof and the standard one could be largely forgotten.
Totally agree. I hope the mint makes an official announcement for the RP Buffalo. This is definitely a very interesting year for collector products.
