US Mint Sales Report: More Sell Outs for 2013 Coins

gold-coinThe recent parade of sell outs for the United States Mint's 2013 products has continued. The latest weekly numismatic product sales report includes sales figures for the recently sold out 2013-W Uncirculated American Silver Eagle and the uncirculated 2013-P 5 Star Generals $5 Gold Commemorative Coin.

The individual option for the 2013-W Uncirculated Silver Eagle originally went on sale at the US Mint on May 28, 2013. This coin represents a collector version of the popular bullion coin struck on specially burnished blanks and carrying the "W" mint mark. This version typically sees lower sales than the more popular proof version, leading some to believe these "burnished" Silver Eagles have better secondary market prospects in the long run.

A sell out for the 2013-W Uncirculated Silver Eagle occurred late last week with sales indicated at 178,972. Although the individual option has sold out, the coin remains available as part of the 2013 Annual Uncirculated Dollar Coin Set, which experienced heavier sales in the wake of the sell out. The set has cumulative sales of 21,011 units.

Last year, the 2012-W Uncirculated Silver Eagle had total individual sales of 202,504 units, plus an additional 28,368 coins included in the separately offered set.

A more surprising sell out occurred for the uncirculated 2013-P 5-Star Generals $5 Gold Coin. This commemorative issue was widely expected to remain available until the pre-announced sales ending date of December 31. The earlier sell out has sent some collectors scrambling to find examples of the coin, already driving secondary market prices significantly higher.

This week's sales report shows sales of the uncirculated 2013 5-Star Generals Gold Coin at 5,612 units. The uncirculated version of the coin is not available in any other sets or products. This suggests that the coin will have the second lowest mintage of any modern commemorative coin. Only the uncirculated 1997-W Jackie Robinson $5 Gold Coin has a lower mintage at 5,174 pieces.

  1. bigboy55 says:

is it possible to list mintage of $5 proof coin ,i was wondering how the 5 star general proof will fall in that mintage of all time

  2. Coin Update says:

Here is a table of all modern commemorative coin mintages:
    http://moderncommemoratives.com/modern-commemorative-coin-mintages/

  3. bigboy55 says:

thanks alot ,thats way you are the pro !!

  4. Barry says:

I thought the mintage limit for the 2012 platinum one-ounce proof was 10,000 but they are over that limit if the sales figure is accurate.

  5. Coin Update says:

    The maximum mintage is 15,000.

  6. Louis says:

The figures in the referenced table for the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics gold coin are reversed. The proof should have the higher mintage, not the unc.

  7. CB says:

The actual mintage of the unc. $5 Generals gold coin may actually be closer to 5200. Final week sales reports often overstate the actual mintage, as they do not include returns and orders canceled by the Mint due to lack of inventory. Final mintage figures often do not show up until a year or two after sales are concluded. For instance, I haven’t yet heard of official mintage totals for the 2011 Lucretia Garfield and Lucy Hayes First Spouse gold coins.

  8. ken may says:

I ordered several 2013 limited edition proof sets on December 12 and the mint has backordered until Feb 21. Has the mint published any info on why they are backordered? I would have thought production would be ready to ship right after the order period opened.
