The latest United States Mint numismatic product sales report includes the debut numbers for several new products led by the Florence Harding First Spouse Gold Coins. Elsewhere in the report, many numismatic gold coins saw a boost during the week, and the 2013 Uncirculated Coin Set has sold out.
On July 10, 2014, the US Mint began accepting orders for the 2014 Florence Harding First Spouse Gold Coins, representing the first release of the series for this year. The coin was available in proof or uncirculated version across a combined maximum authorized mintage of 10,000 pieces. Through the reporting date of July 13, orders have been received for 907 proof and 574 uncirculated coins, for a total of 1,481 across the two options. This represented a slower start compared to the prior release of the series featuring Edith Wilson, which had opened at combined sales of 1,970.
Also making its debut this week was the 2014 America the Beautiful Quarters Uncirculated Coin Set, which contains uncirculated quality examples of this year’s quarters from the Philadelphia and Denver Mint facilities. Initial sales came in at 12,085 units, which was slightly weaker compared to the prior year product which had opened at 13,052 units.
The Herbert Hoover Presidential $1 Coin Cover also makes its first appearance at 9,085 units from the 20,000 product limit.
Stronger sales were seen during the weekly period across several numismatic gold coin products. This was led by the one ounce 2014 Proof Gold Eagle, which added sales of 508 units compared to 57 units in the prior week. Strong comparative gains were also seen for the individual one half ounce and individual one quarter ounce sized coins. The 2014-W Uncirculated Gold Eagle added sales of 172 units compared to 64 units in the prior week. Sales for the 2013-dated First Spouse Gold Coins also saw improvement with orders of 149 units compared to 73 units in the prior week.
Early this week, the 2013 United States Mint Uncirculated Coin Set sold out with indicated sales of 365,408 units. This number may see slight adjustment in next week’s report. The sell out is significant since the last reported sales levels will mark a fresh low for the product type. The prior year 2012 Uncirculated Coin Set had sold out at 392,224 units and currently commands a strong premium on the secondary market.
Update: The 2013 Proof Set has also just sold out. The last reported sales of 802,328 are slightly ahead of last year’s 2012 Proof Set which ended sales at 794,002 units. After the proof set was marked as sold out, the 2013 Mint Set changed status to available once again.
