The latest weekly report of United States Mint numismatic product sales includes the debut figures for the recently released 2012 America the Beautiful Quarters Proof Set. Other areas of focus include the 2011 Proof Platinum Eagle and the America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coins.
On January 17, the US Mint began sales of the 2012 Quarters Proof Set, containing copper-nickel clad proof versions of each of this year's quarters. This followed the release of a set containing 90% silver proof versions of the quarters one week prior. The newly released clad version of the set achieved opening sales of 50,774 units. This was a slower start than the silver version of the set, which had debuted at 61,181.
The numbers for the 2012 America the Beautiful Quarters Proof Set are also down when compared to the similar five coin sets released in the prior two years. The 2010-dated set had debuted with sales of 75,558 and the 2011-dated set had debuted with sales of 53,944.
The 2011 Proof Platinum Eagle recorded its highest weekly sales total in more than two months at 449. To date, the US Mint has now recorded total sales of 12,920 out of the 15,000 maximum mintage. The price for the coin was increased by $100 on January 18, which may have prompted some collectors to order the coin early in the week ahead of the increase.
The recently released 2011-P Vicksburg National Military Park Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin achieved weekly sales of 1,752, bringing total sales to 9,613. The product first went on sale January 12. The US Mint has just announced that effective January 25 at 12:00 Noon, the household ordering limit for the product will be removed.
The complete US Mint numismatic product sales report appears below. The figures are compiled through January 23, 2012. The first number column represents total sales through the reporting date, and the second number column represents the change in sales since the last report. Products with sales followed by an asterisk (*) are no longer available from the United States Mint. Products listed in bold make their debut on this report. Currently available US Mint products can be found online at http://catalog.usmint.gov/

Does anyone know why the mint is not providing sales numbers for the 2011 S Silver Proof Sets? That’s 2 weeks in a row now that the sales figures have not been updated by them. It’s as if the numbers are some kind of secret or something. Any ideas?
It just hasn’t been on the report. I think they inadvertently dropped it when removing the sold out 2010-dated sets. I will bring it to their attention and hopefully get some numbers next week.
While you’re at it, see if you can get them to provide updated numbers on the 2010 ATB quarter circulating coin set too. Thanks!
It is sad to see the sales of the 9/11 medals doing so poorly. It is a shame that congress did not allow the mint to strike these as coins instead of medals. If they had been able to put a face value on them (something respectful like $10 or $20) I think that sales would be much higher. PM medals just don’t attract buyers like coins do. I think that many view them in the same light as “silver rounds” or private mint collectibles. It is painfully clear that shipments will not threaten the 2 million limit by the time sales are set to cease in December of this year. For those who have not purchased these items, they are absolutely wonderful specimens of the minter’s art. Four distinct surface treatments are used on the medals and the fact that they are minted on the same planchets used for SAEs (even though nothing on the medals states this) puts them in the same class (for me at least) as the reverse proof SAEs.
Look at the 2011-W Uncirculated $50 one ounce Gold American Eagle! The final sales of 8,822 coins makes this the lowest-minted coin of all Gold American Eagles of any denomination, weight, and striking type. This is BIG NEWS!
Richard,
With the Mint’s tendency to end mintages on an even number lately, I can see that number being decreased to an even 8,800 in the near future. There might have been two batches of 4,400 coins struck, since I seem to recall a VERY brief online backorder notice when the sales figures were around 4,500. I think the notice was posted and taken down within a 24-hour period then.
There hasn’t been TOO much interest in the coin yet on the secondary market, from what I’ve seen. I really haven’t seen any raw coins sell lately, just graded ones. I saw several NGC MS-70 (non-early release) sell for anywhere from the $2,500 to $2,900 range. I’ve seen ASKING prices of nearly $4,000 or more for the “first strike” or “early release” MS-70 coins, but no takers.
It could take a few months for better numismatic premiums to develop for this coin, but I think it will happen sometime.
I was one of the “lucky” ones who ordered the 2011 Platinum eagle proof at $1,692, ahead of last week’s price increase. Platinum has been moving upward to the point where the Mint may have to increase the price yet another $100 if platinum should stay above 1550 through to next Wednesday.
Received sales figures for the previously missing products.
2011 Silver Proof Set is 547,314
2010 ATB Circulating Coin Set is 24,903.
Table has been updated.
