The latest weekly report of the US Mint's numismatic product sales showed a general slow down in demand for many products and an uptick in demand for some First Spouse Gold Coins. The report does not debut any new products and the next release for the America the Beautiful Quarters Proof Set won't occur until May 13. As a change of pace, this report will take focus on an emerging trend illustrated by the 2010 Presidential Dollar Proof Set.
When the US Mint releases a new product, the highest sales almost always occur during the first week of availability, followed by a rapidly slowing pace of sales in the following weeks, until eventually a low base level of demand emerges. This year, the drop off in demand after the first week of sales has been much more pronounced.
The 2010 Presidential Dollar Proof Set illustrates the changing pattern of sales. In the set's first appearance on the weekly sales report, debut sales came in at 224,426 units. This was far above the debut sales figures for the 2009 Presidential Dollar Proof Set, which had sales of 82,168 in the first reporting period.
Now, less than three months after the strong opening, sales of the 2010 Presidential Dollar Proof Set have fallen to less than 5,000 per week, with total sales of 361,461 sets to date. This is actually below the total sales level that the 2009 Presidential Dollar Proof Set had attained by the corresponding year ago period. Between February 10, 2009 and April 29, 2009, last year's set had recorded sales of 520,883.
So despite having nearly triple the debut sales, the 2010 set has already fallen behind the pace of sales seen for the 2009 set. This seems like an interesting trend to watch as the year unfolds and more products are released.
The full weekly sales report is presented below. Figures are compiled through May 2, 2010. The first number column indicates total sales through the reporting date and the second number column represents the change in sales since the last report. Figures which are followed by an asterisk (*) are no longer available for sale at the US Mint.
