The latest weekly US Mint sales report shows a sharp decline in the pace of sales for available collectible gold coin offerings. The decline was no doubt a result of the recent fall for the price of gold combined with the US Mint's current pricing policy for gold numismatic products. Under the policy, prices are adjusted as often as weekly based on the average price of gold for the prior week. Collectors may be delaying purchases under after this week's price reduction or until the price of gold shows more stability.
The Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coin had sales of 587 to bring the year to date total to 108,794 coins. The US Mint recently announced that this coin would only remain available until December 31, 2009.
The 2009 Proof Gold Buffalo recorded sales of only 398 coins this week. In the two prior weeks the sales level had exceeded 2,000 coins. The total number of coins sold is now 40,631. Sales of the available 2009 First Spouse Gold Coins declined considerably, particularly for the Margaret Taylor coins which are coming off strong sales of the the prior week when the coins were launched.
The table below presents the full report of US Mint sales figures. Total sales for each product are compiled as of December 13, 2009. The first number column represents the total sales to date. The second number column represents the change in sales since last week. The US Mint did not provide sales data for products with recently concluded sales.
