US Mint Sales: One-Half Ounce Proof Gold Eagle Sold Out

The latest US Mint numismatic sales report includes a surprise sell out for one of the 2011 Proof Gold Eagle products and the debut numbers for the Presidential Dollar Coin & First Spouse Medal Set featuring Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln.

Shortly after posting last week's report, the United States Mint stopped selling the one-half ounce individual option for the 2011 Proof Gold Eagle. The sell out was surprising because unit sales were still far below the maximum product limit established by the Mint. This week's report shows sales of 10,166 coins out of the 15,000 limit. It seems that the Mint's total production was below the product limit.

In previous reports, the Proof Gold Eagle product sales had been compared to the product limits to determine proximity to a sell out. If the US Mint did not produce the maximum for one of the options, it is possible that other options were also under produced. This seems to leave the door open for a sell out of the remaining individual one-quarter ounce, one-tenth ounce, and 4 coin set options at any point.

The Presidential $1 Coin & First Spouse Medal Set featuring the 16th President and his wife debuts on this week's report. As with other Lincoln-related products, higher sales were expected. In the opening days, the US Mint recorded sales of 3,753 units.  This compares to debut sales figures of 2,080 for the previous set featuring James Buchanan's Liberty and 1,340 for the next prior set featuring Jane Pierce.

On a final note, the 2010 Proof Silver Eagle shows no change in sales from the prior week. I have asked the US Mint for clarification on this figure and will update the report if I receive new information.

The full US Mint numismatic product sales report appears following. Figures are compiled as of December 26, 2010. The first number column represents total sales through the reporting date, and the second number column represents the change in sales since the last report. Figures which are followed by an asterisk (*) are no longer available for sale from the United States Mint.  Lines appearing in bold are for products which debuted on this report. Available US Mint products can be found online at http://catalog.usmint.gov/
