The latest weekly report of the United States Mint's numismatic product sales includes the debut numbers for two recently released products. These are the 2011-P Chickasaw National Recreation Area Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin and the El Yunque National Forest Quarter Three Coin Set. Both products showed improvement from the prior release within the respective product lines.
The Chickasaw Five Ounce Silver Coins went on sale at the Mint on February 9, 2012. The coins carried the lowest initial pricing for any release within the numismatic series at $204.95 per coin. Also, as a change from previous releases, there were no household ordering limits imposed. Through the sales reporting date of February 13, 2012, customers ordered a total of 8,658 coins. This exceeds the opening sales figures for the previous release featuring Vicksburg National Military Park, which sold had sold 7,861 coins during the opening period. The Chickasaw figures fall just short of the opening figures for the next previous release featuring Olympic National Park, which debuted at 8,662.
The US Mint began sales of the 2012 El Yunque National Forest Quarter Three Coin Sets on February 7, 2012. As a change from previous releases for the product line, the sets included a full color image on the plastic card. The pricing for the sets was also lower at $9.95 each, compared to $14.95 each for prior year releases. Opening sales for the product reached 11,391. This exceeded the opening sales for the previous three coin set, which had debuted at 10,483.
Elsewhere in the report, the 2012 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set moved up by 3,428 units to reach total sales of 78,269. The clad version of the set had lower weekly sales of 2,735 and lower total sales of 62,961. Traditionally, the more affordable clad version of the set has outsold the silver version, however this year collectors seem to have shifted their focus.
The complete US Mint numismatic product sales report appears below. The figures are compiled through February 13, 2012. The first number column represents total sales through the reporting date, and the second number column represents the change in sales since the last report. Products with sales followed by an asterisk (*) are no longer available from the United States Mint. Products listed in bold make their debut on this report. I think the surge in Chickasaw sales must be caused by the concern that the Mint might reprice the coins. If it was the design, I’d have expected the bullion coin to sell better than it did.
But it also seems like the surge in sales due to repricing fears may be slowing down. The sales of the 2011 silver eagle seem to be slowing back down after the big surge.
CO….I think the surge in sales is also due to fact that this is the first issue without a household limit on the first day of sales. I’m sure dealers like MCM snapped up a bunch of these.
I started the 3 coin set of the ATB quarters when it started. Great improvments in the collection.
Not only a nice reduction in price but it’s better looking too.
