The latest report of the United States Mint's numismatic product sales includes the debut figures for the 2011-W Uncirculated Silver Eagle. Sales of most numismatic gold products continue at subdued levels.
The 2011-W Uncirculated Silver Eagle was released on September 15, 2011. The coins are struck on specially burnished blanks and carry the "W" mint mark. Through the reporting date of September 19, 2011, the US Mint sold 184,967 units. A collectible uncirculated version of the coin has not been offered since 2008. For the subsequent two years, the offering was canceled in relation to high demand for silver bullion coins. This year's coin is also expected to be included in a 25th Anniversary Silver Eagle Set to be released in October.
Despite a reduction in prices, sales of the available numismatic gold products experienced mostly slower sales compared to the previous period. The highest unit sales were achieved for the recently released Lucy Hayes First Spouse Gold Coins at 234 proofs and 153 uncirculated coins.
The 2011 Proof Set, 2011 Silver Proof Set, and 2011 Uncirculated Mint Set saw higher sales numbers. Compared to the prior reporting period, sales increased by 78%, 59%, and 96%, respectively.
The full US Mint numismatic product sales report appears below. The figures are compiled through September 19, 2011. The first number column represents total sales through the reporting date, and the second number column represents the change in sales since the last report. Products with sales followed by an asterisk (*) are no longer available from the United States Mint. Products which make their first appearance on this report appear in bold. The platinum eagle sales seem to have really slowed down. For awhile it was sort of creeping along with 100-200 a week, and sometimes dropping to around 50. I don’t think it’s ever dropped as low as 37 though.
Seems like Mount Hood sales are still fairly sluggish, though if it can maintain its current pace it should reach a sellout a little before Christmas.
Minus 2132 “W” 9/11 medals seems odd. That’s a lot of returns for a week. I would think sales will be slower after the anniversary, and only 160,000 out of 2 million have been sold though we don’t know how many have actually been minted yet. Glad I went with the ‘P” medal which has the lower mintage.
Later this year the Mint is strikeing the
25th anniversary Silver Eagle Coins. Is
the Mint also going to do the 25th anniversary Gold Eagles ? This would bring
the current one ounce Gold Unc. Eagles current sales numbers up dramatically. With
the price of Gold down I think they will.
Collectors may be able to afford Gold again.
