Today, November 10, 2009 at 12:00 Noon ET, the United States Mint began sales of the U.S. Virgin Islands First Day Coin Cover.
The Virgin Islands Quarter is the fifth release of this year's DC & US Territories Quarters Program. The reverse design features a native bird known as the Banana Quit, the Yellow Cedar flower, and the native Tyre palm tree. The background features an outline of the three main islands and the motto "United in Pride and Hope." The reverse was designed and sculpted by Joseph Menna.
The U.S. Virgin Islands First Day Coin Cover features one quarter produced at the Philadelphia Mint and one produced a the Denver Mint. These are from the first day of production at each respective mint. The coins are mounted on a custom designed display card in an envelope with a 44-cent United States Flag postage stamp. The postmark is September 28, 2009, Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, VI, the first day the U.S. Virgin Islands Quarters were released to the public.
The product has an overall limit of 20,000 units. Each cover is priced at $14.95 plus applicable shipping and handling charges.
