The United States Mint will start accepting orders for the 2013 American Gold Buffalo Proof Coin on May 23, 2013 at 12:00 Noon ET. This represents the latest numismatic release for the popular one ounce .9999 fine, 24-karat gold coin.
The design for the American Gold Buffalo is taken from the original 1913 Type 1 Buffalo Nickel designed by James Earle Fraser. The obverse features a profile portrait of a Native American based on a composite of real life models. The reverse features a depiction of an American Bison, commonly referred to as a buffalo, which is believed to have been based on Black Diamond of the Central Park Zoo. More can be found here about the design of the original Buffalo Nickel.
The 24 karat gold coin includes the inscriptions “Liberty”, “2013”, and the “W” mint mark on the obverse. The reverse includes “United States of America”, “In God We Trust”, the legal tender face value of “$50”, the the precious metal weight and fineness “1 oz. .9999 Fine Gold”.
Each coin has a diameter of 1.287 inches, thickness of 0.116 inches, and weight of 1.0001 troy ounce.
The United States Mint is offering the 2013-W Proof Gold Buffalo without a stated maximum mintage and without an ordering limit. The coins are priced at $1,790 each for the start of sales. Pricing will be subject to adjustment as frequently as weekly based on the average market price of gold.
Packaging consists of an elegant hardwood box with matte finish and faux leather inset, along with a certificate of authenticity.
Later this year, the US Mint intends to offer an individual reverse proof version of the coin to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the design. The release date for this special issue is not yet known.
