The United States Mint has started accepting orders for 2014 Great Sand Dunes National Park Quarters packaged in numismatic bags and rolls. The products include circulating quality coins struck at the Philadelphia, Denver, or San Francisco Mint facilities.
The Great Sand Dunes Quarter represents the fourth release of the year and the twenty-fourth release overall within the America the Beautiful Quarters Program. Launched in 2010, the program features five different coin designs annually representing a national park or site from each state, territory, and the District of Columbia. The order of release is based on the order the sites were federally designated.
The reverse design of the latest coin of the series features a depiction of a father and son playing in the sand in a creek bed of Sand Dunes National Park. The background includes the distinctive mountains and sand dunes of the site. Inscriptions read “Great Sand Dunes”, “Colorado”, “2014”, and “E Pluribus Unum”. The reverse was designed and engraved by Don Everhart.
The obverse features John Flanagan’s 1932 portrait of George Washington with the original details restored. Inscriptions read “United States of America”, “Liberty”, “In God We Trust”, and “Quarter Dollar”.
Products offered by the United States Mint include single 40-coin rolls containing coins with the “S” mint mark are priced at $18.95; two rolls sets containing one 40-coin roll each with “P” and “D” mint marks are priced at $32.95 per set; and three roll sets containing one 40-coin roll each with the “P”, “D”, and “S” mint marks are priced at $46.95 per set. Finally, there are 100-coin bags containing coins with either the “P”, “D”, or “S” mint mark, priced at $34.95 each.
All products feature special numismatic packaging which incorporates the name of the site, the state abbreviation, the face value of the contents, and the mint mark.
The United States Mint and National Park Service will host an official launch ceremony for the Great Sand Dunes Quarter on September 4, 2014 at 10:00 AM MT. The event will take place at the Great Sand Dunes National Park, Dunes Parking Area, Mosca, CO 81146. A coin exchange will follow the event where attendees will be able to exchange a minimum of $10 to a maximum of $100 for rolls of the new quarters.
A coin forum will be held the evening before the launch ceremony on September 3, 2014 at 7:00 PM MT. The forum will be held at Alamosa Recreation Center, 2222 Old Sanford Road, Alamosa, CO 81101.
