After four consecutive years of record breaking results, sales of the United States Mint’s American Silver Eagle bullion coins declined in 2012. Sales of American Gold Eagles also saw a decline from the levels of the prior year.
Silver Eagle bullion sales had been gaining momentum in the fourth quarter of the year, with monthly sales for October and November exceeding year ago levels. This momentum was stalled in mid-December, when the US Mint announced that all remaining inventories of 2012-dated coins had sold out and no additional coins would be available for authorized purchasers to order until the following year.
During the limited period of availability in the month of December, American Silver Eagles sold 1,635,000 troy ounces. The 2013-dated Silver Eagles will go on sale January 7, 2013.
