The Royal Mint has released the latest coin, which is part of the ongoing series entitled “Royal Tudor Beasts,” released over five years and focuses on the mythical and actual animals which feature in heraldry. The first coins in the collection were unveiled at Hampton Court Palace in October last year, where the original Royal Beasts still welcome visitors today. The Yale of Beaufort is an awe-inspiring beast, with an interesting provenance. Collectable coins featuring the Seymour Panther and the Lion of England have already been unveiled as part of the “Royal Tudor Beasts” series.
Dated 2023, the reverse side is designed by artist David Lawrence, his depiction of the Yale of Beaufort is a unique balance of the naturalistic elements of the creature along with a stylised, heraldic depiction incorporated into the design. Above the primary design is the text YALE OF BEAUFORT, with the year shown below.
The obverse side includes the fifth definitive effigy of HM Queen Elizabeth II created by Jody Clark and introduced onto all British circulation and commemorative coins in 2015. The denomination from 2 POUNDS to 2000 POUNDS is included in the legend surrounding the Queen’s likeness.
