The Royal Mint continues its Harry Potter collection with the release of new coins featuring Professor Albus Dumbledore, the headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The third coin in the series marks the 25th anniversary of the first publication of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. When completed, the collection will include four coin designs, with the next set featuring the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
The reverse side of the new range of coins is designed by Ffion Gwillim, a product designer at the Royal Mint who has depicted Albus Dumbledore, and is based on original designs of the Harry Potter collection and illustrations of Jim Kay, the artist who created the first fully illustrated edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Above the primary design is the text ALBUS DUMBLEDORE and to the right is a latent image application which includes the numeral 25 and a lightning bolt. The coins have colour applied to the design via utilisation of an advanced picosecond laser used by the Royal Mint during production.
The obverse side bears the effigy of HM King Charles III, created by British sculptor Martin Jennings and introduced onto UK Coinage in 2022. Each coin also includes the year of release 2023 and the denomination from 50 PENCE to 200 POUNDS as part of the legend surrounding the King’s likeness. Also featured on the £2 one-ounce silver Proof option is an incused edge inscription which reads NITWIT! BLUBBER! ODDMENT! TWEAK!
