The Royal Mint has launched (24th January) a dynamic and ambitious new numismatic collector series that focuses on the 1,000-year-old kingdom and the sovereigns who have played a pivotal role in shaping the realm. Some of the most legendary monarchs have worn the English or British crown and the newly launched “British Monarchs Collection” uniquely celebrates these iconic kings and queens by providing a numismatic snapshot of their reign and chapters of history they represent.
The series launches with the first king in the Tudor dynasty Henry VII, who reigned from 1485 to 1509, and was succeeded by his son, the infamous King Henry VIII. The reverse side features a finely recreated effigy of the 15th-century monarch as he appeared on his silver hammered coinage. Each of the commemorative coins in the new series features the obverse portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Jody Clark and in use of all British commemorative and circulation type coins since 2015. The denomination and year of issue also appear on the obverse as part of the legend surrounding the Queen’s likeness.
The series will also include monarchs from the Stuart, Hanoverian, and Windsor — formerly known as Saxe-Coburg-Gotha — royal houses. Each year will see the launch of several new coins, released sequentially in January, March, June and September*.
